I began by fitting the two end posts and fastening them in place temporarily.
I removed the posts and fastened them in a frame the exact size as the stairwell. The top rail is on the table ready to clean and fit.
The fitting has begun. I positioned the rail over the posts and traced the shapes of the post tops on the rail. A bit at a time I removed material with a drill and chisel to create a socket for the post tops. The process required several tracings.
After the fitting was complete my apprentice and I ground and sanded the rail smooth.
I lagged the finished posts in place permanantly and secured the top rail to the posts. The next step is to fill in the spaces. That can wait until I renovate Mom's bathroom.
The explanation of life and related writings.
While earning a B.A. and B.Phys.Ed. at McMaster U circa 1970 I learned conflict pervades our lives, and I asked why. After years of looking outside the existing boxes I found the answer is the question of meaning I call "the last why", for it will never be answered. Still humanity has tried to "fill the void" behind "Why am I?" ever since, according to one story, it was first asked, by 'Eve'. The ways we try all conflict. The result is our history of optional, increasing conflict that will end in one of two ways.
In 2005 my Mom's need allowed me to see if I was a fool for asking why by seeking reaction to my detailed analysis in my epic "The Last Why: the poem" the only way an anonymous carpenter could, with a website. I first tried to attract visitors with prose posts but when I realized I could also rhyme reason in short verse I did for my poetry is unique and so much easier to remember. I've had to advertise so I could be twice the fool but likes suggest I may not be.
If you like the reason in my rhymes please at least click the new 'like' (heart) button. It will help keep mine beating. Sharing may help keep the heart of humanity beating. Thank you. Doug.E.Barr
