<image:caption>I'd been alone for 16 years when Puss 'flew' into my life. I didn't want a cat but after she arrived I remember not being specific when I thought I said to myself a few days earlier, "God I need some company". We had a few laughs over the years when wondering about the circumstances of her arrival. She came to my door. I called her Puss because she'd probably been called Puss and giving her a proper name would have made her mine. I tried for a week to give her away then spent 8 years loving her. She was an angel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>She taught me how to take life easy; and in eight years she never once asked me to take her out. At the end the vet suggested we "put her down". I resisted for a week or so but finally decided to take her in Saturday December 18 2004. On Friday afternoon I carried her upstairs to have our last of countless naps together. When we awoke I carried her downstairs and placed her on a pad on the heated floor. Mercifully sometime during the next 2 hours Puss died. I cried.</image:caption>

      <image:title>catsnaps - Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>Seventeen months ago I bought two cats from the animal shelter for $140.00 each. Lord Nelson, the big male is a Velcro cat. Lady Zola the pretty female was a +pole cat, sadly the same pole as me. For almost 17 months approaching her has been like trying to put the same + poles of 2 magnets together. When I'd get within 3 feet of her she'd make a cooing sound then buck like a horse an trot away. I was thinking I had wasted my money for what good is a cat that doesn't want to curl up in your lap once in awhile. Recently however, Zola discovered she loves to get brushed. Now if she is awake when I head down stairs she races past me and sits by her brush. I usually accommodate her. She has even begun to jump onto my lap on occasion, when Nelson isn't there. Zola is just like a woman I know. I have been waiting for her to let me get close for 17 years. Perhaps there is hope.</image:caption>

      <image:title>remembering mom 12/28/1915-07/27/2010 - Memorial bench</image:title>
<image:caption>Across the highway from where we live there is a lake with homes along its shore. Mom and I often walk along the road that services these homes. Due to the shape of the lake the road ends and begins again about 100 meters further on. The two ends of the road are connected by a lovely path through the woods. At the beginning of the path there is a memorial bench that we often sit on to enjoy the view. It inspired a poem I called "Mother's Bench".</image:caption>

<image:caption>Every Sunday throughout the summer there is farmer's market in town. We went most Sundays mostly just to enjoy an outing together. This picture was taken on Thanksgiving Sunday, the last market for the year. The experience inspired my poem, "Market Memory".</image:caption>

      <image:title>remembering mom 12/28/1915-07/27/2010 - Worn out</image:title>
<image:caption>I had to get Mom a new broom. Mom would have kept using the old one until the bristles were gone. Then she would have used the handle and when she wore that out she would have kept sweeping with her hands. I think I bought the old broom when she came to stay with me in 2001 because I can't imagine I had any need for one before that.</image:caption>

      <image:title>remembering mom 12/28/1915-07/27/2010 - Scrabble queen</image:title>
<image:caption>It is a conservative estimate that since beginning to live with me in 2001 Mom and I have played over 1600 games of scrabble. I think she has won about 1 in 5. Each time she reacts the same. First she laughs and slaps her leg. Then she says, "Incredible". Next she tries to console me with, "You can only play what you get." Occasionally she will ask me again who won. I would like to think she is putting me on but sadly, although she can remember how to spell and add up her score with the occasional help, she can't remember who won a few minutes after the game. If Mom does ask, I tell her again and she gets to enjoy the experience a second time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>remembering mom 12/28/1915-07/27/2010 - Foreboding</image:title>
<image:caption>I thought I was going to title this picture "the last sweep". It was taken just after Mom suffered through an attack of shingles followed by a bladder infection. For the first time I had to help her down the steps to the driveway so she could sweep. Prior to her health problems she would have swept her way down the steps and swept the entire flat area of the driveway without stopping. This day she lasted about 5 minutes before she needed a rest. I thought I was going to lose her. Happily, as you can see Mom recovered most of her lost life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>our home and garden - Our house</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1980 I built a 30' x 28' square box cabin that followed the lines of the front walls that are set back. In 1999 I added an 18' wide x 10' deep section to the left side of the front. The addition gave me a front entrance, a wide set of stairs up the living level, floor to ceiling windows and another 108 sq' of living room floor space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>our home and garden - Garden wall</image:title>
<image:caption>The garden wall was a huge pile of rocks I dumped around the trees in the right side of the picture in the shade. I was going to cover the rocks with dirt; but I pulled a few out to retain the bank so I could plant a tree. They looked pretty good so I pulled out a few more. Eventually I had a wall and a wall needs a cap so I poured a concrete cap. I then squeezed mortor into the gaps between the rocks using a mortor bag. Some guys can make a project out of anything, even a pile of rocks.</image:caption>
